Privacy Policy

In short

There is no account to create, no profile, no third-party advertising and no third-party tracker. Your videos and their sound stay on your phone, unless you agree to the sending described below.

The app sends three things to our servers:

None of this carries your name, email address, phone number, location or an advertising identifier. The first two can be switched off in the app's settings, Privacy > Anonymous usage statistics; the third is off until you turn it on. This page says exactly what leaves, when, and what we do with it.

What the app keeps on your phone

In the app's private storage:

You delete a take from the app's gallery, and everything the app keeps by deleting the app. Takes are not included in your iCloud backups. A take you saved to Photos stays there until you delete it from Photos.

Camera, microphone and photos

Camera. It films to show you your movement on a delay. The picture stays in the phone's memory over a rolling window, and nothing is kept until you record. The skeleton and key moment detection are computed on the phone. The camera is also used to read a control room's QR code.

Microphone (archers only). It is only requested if you chose archery. It hears the arrow leave the bow and hit the target, to place those two moments on the take and estimate the arrow's speed. The last thirty seconds of sound are held in memory; when a take is recorded, its sound is stored beside it, in the app, and deleted with it. It is not added to the videos you save to Photos. It only leaves the phone through the optional sending described below.

Photos. The app never has access to your whole photo library. To analyse a video, you pick it yourself in the iOS picker, and the app receives only that one. To save a take to Photos, the app asks only for permission to add, not to read.

What travels between your devices

Up to four iPhones can send their picture to Video Delay on a Mac. The devices find each other through Bonjour (_videodelay._tcp), on your local network or directly from device to device, without Wi-Fi.

What travels then: the iPhone's random identifier, its type and generic device name ("iPhone"), its battery level, temperature and orientation, and the video. The Mac advertises its computer name to devices on the network while "Discoverable" is on. The link is encrypted (TLS with a key derived from the four-digit code, and AES-GCM for the video): a device without the code cannot connect. Nothing goes over the internet, and the Mac keeps neither the video nor the device.

The "Local Network" permission is used for this feature only. Refusing it stops nothing else.

What is sent to our servers

Usage counts

When the app opens, when it closes and on some actions, the app adds one to a daily total. What is counted:

A count carries neither your identifier, nor your country, language or phone model. The phone decides whether it has already been counted today; only the "+1" leaves.

The first-launch questionnaire

It asks how you found the app and which sports you mean to use it for. The sport sets the app up: archery turns on the microphone, arrow detection and statistics. You can change it at any time in Settings. The questionnaire is only asked when the phone is online.

Each answer is a "+1" on a total. If you choose "Something else", you can write a few words (60 characters at most). Those words are stored on their own, with the day's date, and read by us to complete the lists: do not put your name in them. An installation can answer only once.

Arrow speeds

For each take whose speed was measured, the app sends the speed, the distances and temperature you entered, your draw length, and where the take came from (filmed or imported), with the day's date. We use this to check and improve the calculation. No identifier is attached.

The anonymous identifier and abuse prevention

So that nobody can skew the totals, our servers only accept a write from a genuine copy of the app (Apple App Attest, through Firebase App Check) signed in with an anonymous Firebase account. The app creates that account itself: it holds no name and no email address. It is a random identifier for your installation, not an identifier of you as a person.

Beside it, we keep a small record for each installation: the day of its first write, how many writes it made each day, and whether it has already answered the questionnaire. This record does not say what was counted. We do not try to match these records with the totals or the answers, and will not.

As with any online service, our providers receive your device's IP address when something is sent. We do not keep it in our data.

If the phone has no connection, or Low Data Mode is on, nothing is sent and the count is simply lost.

Switching this off

In the app's settings, Privacy > Anonymous usage statistics. Off, the app sends none of the above: no count, no questionnaire answer, no speed, and it no longer signs in to the anonymous account. The app works exactly the same.

Optional sending of poorly detected takes (archers)

This is the only sending that contains a video, and it is off until you agree to it. The app offers it during an analysis; you can turn it on or off at any time in Settings, which shows how many videos have been sent.

Once you agree, a take is sent only if the analysis found some key moments and missed others, and if it lasts 35 seconds or less. Thirty takes an hour at most, over Wi-Fi only. A video picked from your photo library and analysed in the app can be sent the same way.

What is sent:

All of the video file's metadata, location included, is removed before sending. Nothing links the take to your anonymous identifier. It is stored under a fingerprint computed from the file itself, which stops the same video being sent twice.

Please note: a video shows you. Even without a name, it is personal data. These takes are viewed by the team training the detection model, and used for that alone. Avoid turning this on if other people appear in your takes without their consent.

Turning sending off stops all future sending and empties the queue. To have a take that was already sent deleted, see "Your rights".

The CapTarget Archery card

If you chose archery, Settings presents the CapTarget Archery app, from the same brand, with a link to its App Store page. It is the app's only promotion. It relies on no data about you: every archer sees the same card. A tap on that link is counted like other actions, and opens the App Store, where Apple's terms apply.

Why, and on what basis

We sell no data, make no advertising use of it, and build no profile.

Who processes this data

Our servers are Google Firebase's (Authentication, App Check, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Storage), which acts on our instructions as a processor. Google may process data outside the European Union, under the safeguards provided by the GDPR (the EU-US adequacy decision and standard contractual clauses). Apple checks that the app is genuine (App Attest) and distributes it.

We include no crash-reporting tool, no ad network, no tracker and no third-party SDK. Apple may share aggregated statistics with us in App Store Connect if you agreed to share analytics with developers in Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.

How long

Children

The app is not aimed specifically at children and asks them for nothing personal. If you are under 15, only turn on sending takes with a parent's agreement. A parent can ask us to delete a take that was sent, as described below.

Your rights (GDPR)

You have the right to access your data, to have it corrected or erased, to object to its processing, to restrict its use, and to withdraw your consent at any time.

Because we do not know who you are, we can only find "your" data if you give us a way to:

To exercise these rights: support@captarget-archery.com. We reply within one month. You can also complain to the CNIL (www.cnil.fr) or to the data protection authority where you live.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page will change, and the current version will be published at this address. A change that extended what the app sends would be announced in the release notes and, if it concerns sending takes, you would be asked again.
